Bone Marrow and Fat Tissue to Treat Arthritis

Bone Marrow and Fat to Manage Arthritis Pain

posted on September 4, 2020

Experts and researchers are finding ways to use cellular therapy to treat arthritis. While some doctors are using this kind of therapy already, it is not the standard of practice.

Using Bone Marrow to Treat Arthritis

Cellular therapy can be done through injections directly into an arthritic joint, such as a knee or hip. Many physicians use ultrasound imaging to assist with precision of the injection.

For this type of procedure, the most common type of stem cells are Bone Marrow Aspirate (BMA). This is done through a process called harvesting. Bone marrow cells are harvested from the patient’s bones using a needle and syringe. This is called bone marrow aspiration (BMA). If that sample is concentrated by using a centrifuge, it is called Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC).

Bone marrow contains substances that help reduce cartilage and joint inflammation. When Bone Marrow Aspirate (BMA) or concentrate (BMC) are injected, they naturally release anti-inflammatory and growth factors that assist in the healing as well as reduction of pain. They may also relieve swelling and encourage a greater range of motion.

Is this Treatment Safe and Effective?

Because the cells are harvested from the patient’s own body, there is no chance the treatment will be rejected. The most common side effect is temporary swelling, irritation, pain following the procedure.

While arthritis does not have a cure, it is proven that this type of cellular treatment can help reduce pain and discomfort. Successful procedures result primarily in improved quality of life or joint function.

Patients with arthritis treated with Bone Marrow BMA or BMC can experience improvement that can last between 1-2 years.

Can a Patient’s Own Fat Cells Be Used to Reduce Arthritis Pain?

Another method of cellular therapy being studied to treat pain caused by arthritis is using fat tissue. A small amount of fat is extracted, filtered and then reinjected into the arthritic joint. This promotes healing of the bone or cartilage, reducing pain. Fat has important protein cells involved with healing and reducing inflammation.

After the cells are harvested, they are cleaned from oils and blood that was extracted with the fat. Only the natural, beneficial properties of the fat tissue are saved for the procedure. Fat tissue is not immediately absorbed into the injected area, which allows this body to maximize the full benefits of the injection.

Despite the above research regarding Bone Marrow and Fat injections help arthritis. Those procedures are NOT approved by Health Canada.
